SharePoint Metadata: What Business Users Need to Know

This session introduces the use of metadata in SharePoint 2010. It gives an overview of the concepts from a business rather than technology perspective and focuses on their practical application in intranets.

At the end of the session you’ll have an understanding of where metadata can add value to your SharePoint sites and a clear explanation of terminology such as managed metadata, term sets, enterprise keywords, tags, taxonomies and content types

Topics covered include:

  • What decisions should business owners of SharePoint be making about metadata?
  • What do site owners and employees need to understand about metadata?
  • How can metadata be used to improve findability?
  • Should we be using lists, folders, document sets, tags or keywords?

Good Writing on the (Internal) Web

So you’re building a new intranet, with all the trimmings. Now all you need are some words. Good words. Words that employees might actually read. Functionality is critical, but content is still king. In this 90-minute session, Jim Ylisela will show you how to:

  • Provide real news that is fresh and engaging
  • Let readers choose how deep they want to go by layering your online content
  • Develop features and profiles employees will read
  • Use all the tools—text, multimedia and social media—to tell good stories
  • Create a comment function that will keep readers coming back
  • Offer “nice to knows” that don’t get in the way of “need to dos.”

How to Build the Right Governance Model for the Digital Workplace

This session will cover what is needed to have the right governance model for your digital workplace.

It will give you an overview on what is needed for the digital workplace to be managed so it brings benefits to the organisation, individuals and collectively, everyone. It should mean that ‘things feel better’ and encourage everyone to use the digital workplace.

By the end of the workshop you will understand the right level of governance needed for your organisation, balancing rewards to be gained while avoiding any risks.

Areas to be covered include:

  • Ownership - who is responsible for developing the strategy, implementing the digital workplace and ongoing management of it?
  • Consistency – what is the appropriate level of governance across your digital workplace?
  • Standards – what are needed for a digital workplace?
  • Integrity - do people have confidence when using information and tools in the digital workplace?
  • What are the next steps you need to make?

How to build and manage virtual teams in a digital workplace

If the digital workplace is going to be location-independent we have to be able to work with people we do not know and have not met in places defined only by latitude, longitude and altitude.

The objectives of this workshop is to help you explore what it takes to build virtual teams and then work as a member or manage them.

The workshop will cover:

  • Finding the people we need
  • Developing collaboration personas
  • Understanding the five key elements of a successful virtual team
  • Assessing implications of technology, time, culture, context and language
  • Evaluating and training

Developing a strategy for enterprise mobile

Greg Nudelman, author of Designing Mobile Search, commented recently that a company without a mobile strategy was a company without a growth strategy. Over the last 12 months the mobile business has been dramatically changed with the arrival of tablet computers. By the end of 2012 over 150 million iPads will have been sold, many to managers in the companies you work for. This workshop will help you decide on the level of priority you should give to supporting mobile access to enterprise information

The workshop will be in four sections:

  • 2012/2013 – what are the current trends in the use of mobile technology
  • Information – what are tablets being used for at present, and what should be the role of the intranet in providing ‘mobile’ information
  • Technology - how will smartphones, tablets and pcs work together, and what are the implications of ‘bring you own device’
  • Governance – who should own mobile initiatives, and what are the key decisions that need to be made over the next six months
